chase
poem no. 10
behind you,
never beside you.
following, reaching,
i never get a hold.
.
you weave through the crowd,
like a leaf on the river -
pulled away from the bank.
i’d dive in to reach you.
.
you’re like a bubble in the waters,
and i the weeds -
tied to the sands,
i’ll watch you leave.
.
you fly like a bird,
whose goal is the skies.
you won’t look down,
you won’t meet my eyes.
.
i’ll pull back the curtain,
to find that you’re not there.
but i hear your voice,
laughter echoes up the stairs.
.
two steps behind -
i’ll chase and i’ll chase.
but you can’t be confined
by the cage of my pace.
.
just look over your shoulder,
i beg and i beg.
“go slower,
let me walk alongside.”
.
and when you hear my voice over the breeze,
begging, “please,
tell me how to
be there with you.”
.
you tell me i’m doing it wrong.
that you need me to be more -
that i’m never there for you,
or that i replaced you someone who’s sure.
.
because, no longer do i need to run
faster than the breeze to be seen.
i have someone who will walk beside me.
who will sit with me and dream.
.
in the stillness of our breath,
the wind comes back to me.
whispering in my ear,
that it did care.
.
that despite having the whole word,
it was alone.
that without me behind it,
nobody knew just how fast it could go.
.
it tells me how i was the tides
that moulded the breeze.
i was the river that kept the leaves afloat,
and the lazy clouds that they teased.
.
the birds chirp,
they tell me that my home was never the chase,
but then, why am I so tired?
my heart never found its place?
.
.
